Before the Sound Design MSc I studied product design and combined with my interest in music production I became interested in sound design.

My hope for when I complete the course is to find work or projects that combine a bit of product design and a bit of sound design, I think that often in sound design it’s easy to end up spending a lot of time stuck behind a computer fiddling away where as with product design you end up creating and building a lot of things with a hands on approach and I always enjoy that.

An area that I am very interested in is, product sound design. This involves creating sounds for products, thinking about the emotional qualities of the sounds and assessing how the sound communicates the value of the product to users. This seems to be an emerging area of sound design and product design that I imagine more companies will pay attention to in the near future.

Ferdinando Valsecchi

As a Sound Designer and Post-Production engineer I’ve started working fairly early on music related content. I’ve then focused on the sound and mixing for fixed media in my final undergraduate year at the University of Florence, analysing the work of Christopher Nolan and how the sound was approached differently in two of his movies (Inception and The Dark Knight Returns).Right now I’m doing a Master in Sound Design at the University of Edinburgh, where I’ve had the chance to approach “sound” from several points of view. In Edinburgh, I’ve started collaborating with an independent production company called Outer Limits Prod., both as a Sound Designer for some of their work (alongside Dee O’Leary) and as a Mixing/Online engineer. I’ve also gained experience in many fields other than the fixed media, such as video games, programming audio (Max MSP) and sound design for small devices.I work as a freelancer music engineer, both on the mixing and mastering side of the post-production, even though mixing is the one I currently am more focused on.

Angus Stewart

I’m a sound designer and musician from the South-West of England. He is currently enrolled on the University of Edinburgh’s MSc program in Sound Design, having studied my undergraduate degree in Music & Technology at the University of East Anglia. My final project is an exploration into transparency, non-linearity and gesture in drum kit and live electronics setups. For the project I am assembling a digitally extended drum kit which makes use of piezo disc microphones placed on the heads of drums. The audio signal picked up from these microphones is fed into a Max/MSP patch interface, which analyses the signal according to: frequency, amplitude, envelope and timing. The data output from this analysis is used as a means of controlling multiple realtime parameters in processing, synthesis & sampling. This is done in an attempt to make the act of playing drums intrinsic to the act of parameter control in performance situations.

Caleb Abbott

I previously studied fine arts, in Canada, with a focus on digital media. This lead me to experimental sound composition and performance as well as live electronic and electroacoustic music. In this program, my goals have been to further develop these skills by gaining more experience with computer programming, specifically in Max/MSP. My final project is a culmination of what I have learned during this course, and it focuses on where I want to go; developing an audio processing unit specifically for vocal solo performance.

Mike Fowler

I am a professional musician and sound artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. With extensive experience in leading creative workshops, I fuse artistic and technical approaches to learning, skill sharing and teaching. Drawing on a diverse academic background of studies in music education, electronics and sound design I engage with a wide range of passions, from synthesiser making and interactive design to field recording, music production and film sound.

Paul Meikle I’m Paul Meikle and I’ve been studying in Edinburgh for the past 5 years now.
