Hogarth, fascinated by \u2018Serpentine Lines\u2019, argued that \u2018S\u2019 shaped lines were active, lively and stimulating and therefore beautiful. As Serpentine lines correspond to what we today call sinusoidal waves, a fundamental visual form derived from mathematics and from musical acoustics, these lines present numerous possibilities for interpretation.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"place \u2013 the challenge of sound in gallery settings\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/11\/04\/place-the-challenge-of-sound-in-gallery-settings\/\"><strong>17 November<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the <em>place<\/em> symposium focuses on sound in gallery spaces with guest speaker Joe Banks (Disinformation), artist and author of <em>Rorschach Audio: Art &amp; Illusion for Sound<\/em> <em>Place<\/em> (Starts 2pm).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"60th birthday concert with Michel Doneda and Edimpro\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/11\/07\/60th-birthday-concert-with-michel-doneda-and-edimpro\/\"><strong>27 November<\/strong><\/a> \u2013\u00a0 renowned experimental saxophonist Michel Doneda celebrates his 60<sup>th<\/sup> birthday with free improvisation collective Edimpro.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"reach overview\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/10\/13\/reach\/\"><strong><em>reach <\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"reach overview\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/10\/13\/reach\/\"><strong>2\u201320<\/strong><\/a> <strong>December<\/strong> \u2013 <em>reach<\/em> explores sound as a connector across distance. Selected from an open call to international artists <em>reach<\/em> is an endless playlist of 3D sonic art from around the world, reflecting the vast range of contemporary sonic arts practice, played through a specifically installed 12 channel ambisonic (3D) sound system.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"supercollider workshop with Marcin Pietruszewski\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/11\/07\/supercollider-workshop-with-marcin-pietruszewski\/\"><strong>8 December<\/strong> <\/a>\u2013 a workshop led by composer Marcin Pietruszewski allows participants to use Supercollider software to access and manipulate the custom built sound system.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"reach \u2013 sound art workshop\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/gap-in-air\/2014\/12\/10\/reach-sound-art-workshop\/\"><strong>15 December<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the <em>reach<\/em> discussion will briefly reflect on the results of the open call and will introduce the technologies behind the playlist and we&#8217;ll explain how it all came together. This session will be workshop-based so bring a laptop with cycling74&#8217;s MaxMSP installed. The works show how user engagement and roving systems can profoundly change the way we interact with sound and our surroundings.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>nature<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout<strong> February \u2013 <\/strong>work by a leading sonic artist will be installed to close the programme. Taking place in the Georgian Gallery, which used to serve as the University\u2019s Natural History Museum, the project will play upon the idea of fieldwork and the use and appropriation of natural sounds. This is accompanied with a <em>nature<\/em> symposium, including discussions and debate about the role of sound in the wider urban and rural environment. Can sound art, sonic artists and their work play a role in policy, wellbeing and public health?<\/p>\n<p><strong>15 February \u2013<\/strong> composer and sound artist Martin Parker performs his multi-speaker rant <em>playRoom<\/em>.
