This is supplementary to my (Jack&#8217;s) portion of Wednesday&#8217;s tutorial.\u00a0I highly recommend that you also read <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.eca.ed.ac.uk\/sounddesignmedia\/2016\/11\/01\/impulse-responses\/\">this<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>\u2026if recording IR from a piece of outboard gear (a reverb device, a guitar pedal, etc), you will also need:<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Audio interface<\/li>\n<li>Outboard gear<\/li>\n<li>Cabling from interface to outboard gear<\/li>\n<li>Cabling from outboard gear to interface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>\u2026if recording IR from an acoustic object (an acoustic musical instrument, a small container, a concert hall, the Sahara Desert, etc), you will also need:<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Audio interface<\/li>\n<li>Loudspeaker<\/li>\n<li>Microphone<\/li>\n<li>Cabling from interface to loudspeaker<\/li>\n<li>Cabling from microphone to interface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><b>Signal chain:<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">Room EQ Wizard (REW) test signal -&gt; target plugin in REAPER -&gt; REW measurement -&gt; export IR from REW as .WAV<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>IR from outboard equipment<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">REW test signal -&gt; audio interface (output) -&gt; outboard gear (input) &#8211; &gt; outboard gear (output) -&gt; audio interface (input) -&gt; REW measurement -&gt; export IR from REW as .WAV<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>IR from acoustic object<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">REW test signal -&gt; audio interface (output) -&gt; loudspeaker -&gt; acoustic object -&gt; microphone -&gt; audio interface (input) -&gt; REW measurement -&gt; export IR from REW as .WAV<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><b>Collecting IR<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>Setup and test signal chain (this process will look a little different depending on what you are recording, and what equipment you are using)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Set-up your REAPER environment <i>(If recording IR from a software plugin in REAPER) <\/i><\/li>\n<li>Set the parameters of the outboard gear <i>(if recording IR from a piece of outboard gear<\/i><i>}<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Position microphone, speaker and object<i> (if recording IR from an acoustic object)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Check levels (you want <b>AT LEAST 4-5dB <\/b>of headroom)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>In REW:<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Set audio device (preferences)<\/li>\n<li>Make a measurement (measurement panel)<\/li>\n<li>Set sweep to cover auditory frequency range (measurement panel -&gt; &#8216;Measure using\u2026&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>Set desired length and number of sweeps (measurement panel -&gt; &#8216;Measure using\u2026&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>Check levels<\/li>\n<li>Start measuring<\/li>\n<li>Export (file -&gt; export -&gt; &#8216;export impulse response as WAV&#8217;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><b>Editing IR<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Locate the IR that you just collected<\/li>\n<li>Import into REAPER (drag and drop onto the arrange window)<\/li>\n<li>Edit the region to remove silence from the start<\/li>\n<li>Zoom in to ensure you start *right* at the beginning<\/li>\n<li>Select the region (click on the IR)<\/li>\n<li>Open Render panel (file -&gt; Render\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Set to render \u2018Selected media items\u2019 (Render panel -&gt; Source)<\/li>\n<li>Name file (Render panel -&gt; Output -&gt; File name)<\/li>\n<li>Choose sample rate \/ bit-depth<\/li>\n<li>Render!
