  31. Does anyone know if the sounds for Week 2 of Sound Design Media have ot be made in the studio, or can they be taken form anywhere?

  32. Hi Matt, I probably will go. But the seats are all sold out…So can I still join this event without a ticket?

  33. What is sound design?
Sound design is the creation of auditory stimuli that elicits particular responses from an audience. Unlike music, sound design is never restricted to a specific form or source[s]; it is a living, breathing, and evolving aural experience where anyone/anything can potentially be a contributor or listener.

  34. What is Sound Design?

Within a context, Sound Design gives clues about the physical, non-visible or non-tangible (emotions etc.) properties of an object or events.

  35. What is sound design? Sound design is a manipulation of one’s aural environment to create a new image of what the mind perceives. Sound has a powerful impact on human perception and sound design exploits that fact to elicit certain feelings and emotions.

  36. What is sound design?

Sound Design is the art of gathering or creating audio, then manipulating these sounds with the purpose of drawing out an emotional or physical response from an audience (or oneself).

  37. What is sound design?
Sound design is a combination of science and art, where recorded, created, randomly generated and edited audio material, manipulates the temporal, spatial, perceptional and emotional flux of image, space or virtual space.

  38. It is through sound design that we are able to enrich, provoke, alter and create a specific environment that enables it’s listener to engage emotionally, knowingly or unknowingly. I would argue that this is the point of designing sound. It is however, a roundabout answer for the question; “What is sound design”.

  39. What’s the sound design?
To consider about what’s the sound design, I will give an overview of the sound design focusing specifically on the types, functions, related disciplines and the characters of sound design.
    1, Functions
With the media industrial processes, sound design includes three processes. Preprocess including how to choose microphones, recording method, environmental considerations. In the mid-processing, sound designer need to consider about cutting and effects. In the final step, it include designing the sound position in the timeline, matching sound and screens, rebuilding the sound field, mixing and designing the sonic structures .
    2. Types
The sound design covers a wide range of branches, such as film, TV ,animation, and also it is shown with details such as microphone selection, dialogues, environments, folly.
    3, Functions
For the overall design of the program or film audio part (including the language of sound , music, sound effects), so that the sound and other artistic means to work together to complete the portrayal in film and TV production.
In the use of audio-visual language of film and television, you can see the screen is intuitive; the voice is the expression of the soul.
    4, relation disciplines
The sound design has relations with variety of disciplines, such as the Sonic arts, acoustics, psychoacoustics, music, screens arts, cutting arts, media productions, Physical acoustics, psychoacoustics, synthesizer technology.
    5, Characteristics
Create and imagine. Making sure the works complements with a unique sound logo: location, times, specific emotional.

In conclusion, I supposed that it is easier to explain what not the sound design is.
First of all, sound design cannot be completed quickly; it is not only to insert sound works, but also fuse diversity sound. To adjust a variety of effects, give the magic sound creative, and use them in the best position. Secondly, sound design means to catch the effective sounds and make them to convey information. Thirdly, sometimes, the distinction among sound design, composition and sonic languages is blurred. For example, a melody which is express picking up specie, how we can sort it as a piece of music or a sound effects. Another case is about to use phone effects on a dialogue, we could insert extra sounds, It is clear that this process looks like we do the sound design, but whether it is concluded in language areas.

  40. “What is Sound Design?”
Sound Design is the development of aural energy by the designer to enhance the listener’s experience of a particular environment or emotion etc. It is the freedom of creativity and opportunity for experimentation that makes Sound Design so unique and fun.

  41. What is sound design?

Sound design is the process of recording and editing sound to create a living environment within a virtual space. Stimulating the brain with the stories the eyes can’t tell.

  42. What is Sound Design?
Sound Design is an exploration of how sound relates to the context of its dissemination. Through practical work or theoretical discourse, sound is treated as a medium for exploring artistic, physical, social and political concepts.

  43. Sound Design is the art of generating an image or a mood through the manipulation of sounds.

  44. Through Sound Design, one creates sonic environments with the purpose of deeply immersing oneself and others into emotive atmospheres. It is about extracting and creating character or expressive elements out of the sonic universe.

  45. Is the construction of a virtual space where the sound is presented in a set of patterns that a human receptor will decode and interpret, then it will create an emotional response. Sound design deals with the relation between emotions, psychological responses, recording techniques and acoustic factors in order to transmit a message through sound.

  46. What is Sound Design? Sound Design incorporates a multitude of different disciplines, mediums and technologies to create an experience or atmosphere, and/or provoke a response or discussion. The sound can be created, manipulated, edited and lifted out of context to generate new meaning, and could be expressed through live performance, a recorded piece or an installation.

  47. Sound Design is a compositional approach/technique to contextualise ‘sound’ in the digital domain. The sound source (acousmatic or live) gets designed through various compositional aesthetics and techniques creating a new language.

  48. This is a somewhat tricky question. Perhaps it is necessary to define what it is not, in order to gain more insight into what it is. It is not really sound art, as art indicates something that someone creates for themselves, that they hope others may enjoy. But art is art, as music is music. The key to the answer of the question is ‘design’ – it is the use of sound to create something for others. With a view to getting paid. I am not suggesting that a sound designer is less of an artiste then someone making bleeps and blips, and arguably there is a lot more to be taken musically from good sound design, than from a lot of sound art that unfortunately lose its aesthetic potential in its technology. Though we must look at this sound design thing in the realm of DESIGN – its business. If you are a graphic designer, who doesn’t get any work because you just do your own thing and say ‘f’ to all the good people who try to make you money, then your not a graphic designer, your an artist. Same goes for sound in that respect. If you design sound your doing it with some exterior factor in mind, often you are doing it for someone else. Though this doesn’t mean your ‘just a designer’. The sound in David Lynch’s ‘Inland Empire’ is as musically potent and any music I can think. Even now I’m thinking about just ripping the audio form it and listening to it in the dark on really good speakers. Of course it is buttressed by the likes of Penderecki on the soundtrack, though the film is aurally sensuous without any music. That interestingly leads me to address the predominance in the above comments that sound design is something that we consider in relation to visual art, films being a prime example. This does not have to be the case at all, as Martin said Film has been written about as a sound art. Sound can tell a story as much as image, Samuel Beckett’s radio works for example, and thats not even good sound design. My point is that you can evoke just as much visual stimulation with sound as with image, even more so due to the fact that the listener will conjure there own images, form there own visual narrative based on your sound. And even then it does not have to evoke an image, it can just evoke a sensation, good design, functional well executed sound production techniques have just as much potential for producing ecstasy as the cello , or piano or a choir. I don’t think I have determined here what sound design is, though I have tried. What I will say is while sound designers are generally thought to be working designing for others. this does not have to be the case: design for design sake, make your work not something which supports some other media, but works in tandem with it. Design sound for sounds sake. It doesn’t have to be anything more than that.

  49. Q: What is Sound Design ?

As far as I am concerned, from deciding the audio scenes with directors and writers of every work of art, no matter a film, drama, theatre, concert, or other multimedia including the listening process, through imagining, discussing, brainstorming, and debating,
to taking care of every detail of audience’s overall perception of hearing, no matter from their ears or from the resonance of their body, through recording, synthesising, editing, processing, mixing, and mastering,
and finally hoping to achieve the goal of making people satisfied even if they close their eyes and believed what “are” actually happening,
    that is Sound Design.

  50. Sound design is the term that the architect of the soundtrack. A sound designer is someone who in charge of the whole soundtrack and get every sound element together. Sound design are not only the design for sound sources but also the design for silence sometimes. In my opinion, an excellent sound designer it the person who can change the worst sound source into the best sound source using his creativity and imagination.

  51. Sound Design is a process of sound creation by organizing audio elements and augmenting the other elements (visual, etc.). In my opinion, not only the output should be pleasing to the ear, but also support listener’s non-aural perception.

  52. I’d say sound design is the ability to create/shape sounds, as much by recording them in a certain way as editing them through a computer ; sculpting sounds in the audible “space” as you sculpt a rock to make it a statue ; recording or synthesizing raw sounds, sculpting them, putting them together, in order to make a coherent whole that will interact with the human mind (creating an image).

  53. Q: What is sound design to you?

A: As with all the aspects of design in general, sound design to me is the art of creating, shaping and manipulating what we call “sound” and “music” in order to realize, express and share ideas, emotions and ourselves in total.

  54. In my opinion, sound design is a concept of creating and using sound to meet the purpose of sound designers. Sound design can be used in many different ways, and defined in different aspects if we consider about its activity. For example, firstly, sound design in visual contents such as films, live performance, plays and electronic things. By this way sound is used as one component of the one context. Secondly, sound design as a sonic object focuses on sound itself such as soundscape, recorded and composed soundtracks, sound design for musical instruments(e.g. patch in synthesizer), sound installation and sound sculpture. By this way, sound designers use sound as a object (like photograph, sculpture, painting and furniture) to communicate with listeners.

  56. In my view, sound design is a tool and signal for expressing emotional flow. Humans always leave sound behind them. Even when being motionless, humans create sound of silence, which has a unique motivation on the reason why he or she makes such a sound. Putting it differently, humans can distinguish each other’s personality, emotional status, and even predict what will happen in the future through elements of sound – amplitude, pitch and timbre. Through sound, each person leaves a signal standing for his or her own emotion, which can be another signal to be recognized by other person, and he or she reacts on that. Thus, humans create a flow of emotion by means of sound, which could be personal or inter-personal. So, sound design should be a tool or signal to deliver a flow of emotion.

  59. Sound design can be utilised as a tool of extension where every parameter of a component is mutable by an agent in the construction of an assemblage.

  60. How to get a Flash animation to play on click 1 and stop on click 2:

The code is mostly the same as the example in this weeks exersize, the only difference is the addition of a variable and what is going on inside the function:

stop(); // ensure the animation is stopped at the beginning

this.square.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, myNewFunction); // same as exersize

var playstop:Number = 1; // this variable acts as a switch so Flash knows whether its currently playing or its stopped.

function myNewFunction (event:MouseEvent) : void { // within the function we need to determine whether we’re playing or stopped and carry out the appropriate action:

    if (playstop == 1) { // if our variable playstop is 1 (ie, stopped)…
playstop = 0; // set the variable to be 0 (effectively ‘flicking the switch’)…
play(); // and start the animation playing
    }
else { // otherwise (ie, if variable playstop is 0)…
playstop = 1; // set the variable to be 1 (‘flicking the switch’ the other way)…
stop(); // and stop the animation from playing
    }
    }

  62. this came in on the sursound list today and I enjoyed it, thought you might too;
I’ve [Douglas Adams has] come up with a set
of rules that describe our reactions to
    technology:
    1. Anything that is in the world when you’re
born is normal and ordinary and is just a
natural part of the way the world works.
    2. Anything that’s invented between when
you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and
exciting and revolutionary and you can
probably get a career in it.
    3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is
against the natural order of things.
[From The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams, 2002]

  74. Hi guys, I know it might seem really early to be thinking about final projects but I am looking to see if someone from the non sound design crew might be interested in some sort of collaboration (I think we can collaborate). Basically if any one is interested in turning an old country house into some sort of 3d model for either a basic computer game, animated film, interactive tour etc. It’s a wicked old house with some seriously cool stuff you wont find anywhere else in the world. I’m lucky enough to stay there so we’d have access whenever we want. Also there are lots of big old houses who i know are interested in getting 3d tours done for their web site so if we get it right there might even be some paid work in the future.

Here’s the web site for the house www.colstoun.co.uk/

drop me an email if you are interested pearaonalexandre@gmail.com

  115. I can’t make my Reid studio booking today, its free all afternoon.

  116. Any DDM’s still looking for final project ideas/collaboration? I’m making a virtual tour type thing of a really cool old country mansion and would ideally partner up with someone to handle the visual side of things so I can concentrate on the sound. Original idea was to build a system in Max and use still footage and embed sound files in the pictures but maybe you visual design types have a better/cooler idea of how to do it? It’s a pretty unique place and has some really cool stuff that you won’t find anywhere else in the world so it could be a pretty cool opportunity. Web site for the house is www.colstoun.co.uk/

  117. I have studio 5 booked but won’t be in until after 3pm as have to wait at home for a delivery, so its free until then. Cheers.

  118. Hello everyone, Chris Prescott here (former SD). I’m in need of male participants for a project i’m doing at the moment, the work involves recording 500 random phrases, it takes about 25 minutes and every person gets paid £5. If you’re interested then get in touch – chris (at) minerva-design.com

  119. I’m not going to be able to make my Studio 1 booking today, please take it if you need it!

  123. Panos – sorry if this is an obvious answer but you can’t go wrong with the KM130s

  124. I’ve had to reorganise things a little this week so have canceled my Russolo Room booking on Thursday. It’s now free until 5pm as is Studio 2 on Friday. Sorry if this has messed anyone around.

  125. @panos – we only have one km130 at the moment, I would also recommend a pair of dpa 4060s, if you can get your hands on them!

  129. Think I may have left my memory stick in one of the Atrium Macs (along the left hand wall) It’s small, silver and says ‘Stray Seal’ on it – I don’t suppose anyone has found it?

  130. Sound Design is obtain recorded sound/creating your own sound and manipulating it to fit what ever mood you are trying to achieve. It can be used in a whole range of media such as video games, movies, and television.

  131. Sound design is the intentional acquisition, sculpting and manipulation of sound to aid the storytelling process by stimulating emotional responses from an individual audience member.

  132. Has anybody had any luck with the password to try and access today’s Sound Design Media lecture notes yet? I’m trying the password Martin suggested and having no luck as he did earlier (he presumed it might be a browser issue, I’m on Chrome here)
    Cheers

  133. sound design is the creative manipulation of sound, the end result of which is something that has artistic merit.

  134. Sound design is the intent to recognize, interpret, enhance, and/or manipulate sonic content with or without regards to its source or origin. Most often, it is associated with recording, synthesis, editing, mixing, effects processing, and various other types of audio production for film, games, TV, music, sound installations, etc.

  135. Sound Design is:

    1) The process by which one human shapes sonic events in an effort to have another human perceive those events in a way predetermined by the first human.

    2) The name of a course I am taking so that one day I can come closer to learning what the word Sound Design means….

  136. Sound design is the art and technique of creating all non-compositional elements of a sound track for film, TV, games, theatre or any other medium of sound delivery. The sound designer’s responsibilities are to convey not only their sonic vision but also the vision of other individuals involved in the project (e.g., directors, producers, picture editors, animators, sculptors, etc.).

  137. Sound Design is the process by which sound is edited, processed and manipulated after its acquisition to its application in a range of Artistic Media. Therein one might argue that elements of Sound Design can be found in any endeavour involving sound in which conscious thought is devoted to controlling or manipulating audio to achieve a particular affect, from live musical performance, installation sonic art to manipulating the sound of your own voice whilst communicating vocally.

  138. An unmediated experience of sound is impossible; sound is always conveyed through some medium, in a certain environment. What’s more, the mental state of the listener hearing the sound also plays an important part in sound perception. Sound design is the art of knowing how a sound is created and conveyed, as well as how it is experienced by the listener in certain situations. Sound design thus has a practical usage in film sound tracks, computer games, audio books and more.

  139. The term “Sound Design” can be applied to the process of developing the artistic directions of audio within a production so as to immerse the viewer in the believability of its visual or narrative content.

  140. Sound Design is an intended sonic experience, perceived by the audience, embedded within various forms of media and performance.

  141. Sound Design can be applied to a huge amount of sonic opportunity. Everything we hear can carry a plethora of different meanings to different people, depending on their associations with it. The role of a sound designer is to recreate this world through creating sonic environments that encourage people not only to listen, but also to experience the full world that is being created or represented by the designer. This can be applied to film, television or video games, as the screen can only ever show a 2D image and the viewer can only be fully immersed in a 3D environment through effective sound design.

  142. Sound design. The design of sound(s). To me, that expression refers to the technical aspect of sonic artwork creation. Its techniques take the move from the physical, material end of the creative process, although there’s a tension towards the opposite end: design techniques are BLIND without meaningful (artistic) ideas and artistic ideas remain EMPTY without design techniques. But rather than being a line, their mutual relationship seems to be a circle: the whole creative process is a constant movement within it.

  143. Sound Design is any process of deliberate creation, manipulation, and/or assembly of sound that ideally takes into consideration the way it is going to be perceived, and how this perception is going to affect the listener(s).

  144. Sound Design is the process of capturing/creating and processing raw sound to achieve an artistic and meaningful result.

  145. From my perspective sound design is combining the real life structure with the dimension of recording techniques and creating something unique which impress and effect the point of the receiver and the image itself and giving another point of view to the listeners imaginary world

  146. To me Sound Design is manipulating sound, whether recorded, synthesised or other to achieve a specified goal, usually non-musical. Encircling the entire process of sound creation from recording through editing down to arrangement, it aims to enrich media like computer game, film, animation etc. or produce a stand-alone piece of work.

  147. Sorry, I somehow managed to not name my files correctly…well, they are named correctly, but I should’ve put in their names in the name field, as opposed to…ah well, anyway, too late to fix that.

  148. I think sound design is a process of active – well, not just active but critical – listening, taking sounds (whether you’ve created or gathered them), deciding how you can best use them to your intended effect, and then manipulating accordingly. It’s using sound like words, as a means of description.

  149. Sound design is the proccess where you manipulate synthesised or physical sounds in order to bring life to an object image or video. sound design can also be applied to installations so the people can interact with the enviroment or objects.

  150. Sound design is the art of delivering content through audible material and is used in music and different types of media. In films and visual arts it is used to help emphasise and express the message which the piece of work is trying to deliver to the audience. Sound design involves recording, processing and synthesising sounds and can be both artistic and technical.

    John
