When: 15:00-16:30, 17/10/2023
Where: ECA West Court, 74 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh
What: A workshop exploring embodiment and sound
UNESCO Week of Sound events are free, book a ticket.
For this panel, we invite the audience to engage with a short, creative listening task. This will be a means for the audience to experience a version of musical ‘conducting’ for themselves, based on an accessible visual mark-making exercise.
This simple, easy-to-follow task sets up a panel discussion which will explore the multimodal dimensions of listening. We will ask, “What is at stake in deep listening?” (Bull and Back, 2015):
– Sound makes us re-think our relational experiences, how we relate to others, ourselves and the spaces and places we inhabit
– Sound makes us re-think our relationship to the other senses and to embodiment itself
(Bull and Back, 2015, Auditory Cultures Reader, 2nd edition)
Who is involved?: Dr Una MacGlone (British Academy Research Fellow, Reid School of Music) (chair), Dr Nikki Moran (Reid School of Music), Dr David Overend (Moray House/EFI) and Peter Nicolson (improviser, cellist, educator).
