In the field, on the street

1 In the field, on the street

This morning’s session calls on us to get out and begin to capture the sounds of the world. Rather than a free-form recording session however, we need a structure and focus to make good use of the time.

In teams of 4, you’ll take at least 2 recording devices out with you to capture sounds of space, place and people. This approach is partly an experiment and partly carefully structured investigation.

1.1 Synchronise watches

Wherever you are at 11:15am, you need to be standing or sitting still, with microphones recording. Across the central area of the city, wherever you are, we need 3 minutes of recording, unbroken, undisturbed by your own presence as recordists. Record at at least 48kHz and 24 bit.

1.2 Other approaches to recording

Other than this very specific 3 minutes we also want you to capture other aspects of the sounds of the spaces you’re capturing, people’s opinions, weather, text-only descriptions, photographs of things making sound.

2 Dealing with the files

When your field recording session is over, please come back to Alison House and begin organising your sound recording material

2.1 Synchronised piece

  • Stereo sound file of the 3 minutes at 48kHz, 24bit (you can record at 96k if you like and down sample when you bounce from pro-tools/reaper).
  • Name the file 1115am_6March2019_yourInitials_location.wav
  • upload your file to the SFM group folder on the MS outlook

Quick improvisation through the 12 recordings

This one has not been normalized to -23LUFS. I much prefer soundscapes as naturalistically loud as possible, that usually means relatively quiet.
