Three internationally-acclaimed improvisers, composers and instrumentalists Fred Frith (guitar), Chris Cutler (drums/percussion) and Tom Arthurs (trumpet) come together to perform in a special concert held in honour of distinguished scholar professor Simon Frith.
Fred Frith, as well as being Simon’s brother, is a world renowned multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser. Frith was one of the key members in the influential avant-rock group Henry Cow, as well as offshoots Art Bears, Massacre and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Derek Bailey, The Residents, Lol Coxhill, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton and Bill Laswell. Frith is currently a professor of composition in the music department at Mills College in Oakland, California, and continues his prolific work rate in the world of experimental music.
Chris Cutler, a frequent collaborator with Frith, sprung from the same fertile art-rock soil in the 70s. A percussionist, composer, lyricist and music theorist he has worked with Henry Cow, Art Bears, News from Babel, Pere Ubu and Gong and, like Frith, literally hundreds of musicians from all sides of the experimental music spectrum. Cutler also runs the British independent record label Recommended Records, is the editor of its sound-magazine, RēR Quarterly and has written about and lectured extensively on contemporary music .
Tom Arthurs has been awarded commissions from the BBC/RPS for both the City of London Festival and the BBC Proms and has worked with a variety of artists,e.g. The Julia Hülsmann Quartet, Eric Schaefer, The Miles Perkin Quartet, Richard Fairhurst, John Surman, John Taylor, Tom Rainey, Drew Gress, Jack DeJohnette, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler and Stéphane Payen. Thrice-nominated in the BBC Jazz Awards, Tom has been featured extensively on BBC Radio 3 as part of the New Generation Scheme and has performed internationally with festival credits including Berlin, North Sea, Cheltenham, Moers, Bath, Jazzd’or, London, Manchester, Belfast and Jerusalem.
This unique trio has been secretive about the night’s music, only promising to “get on stage and play some scintillating music…”
