week 1 – what is fixed?

part 1

In week 1 we explore what is fixed in a media-production context. We also discuss what in this envrionment is subject to almost never-ending change. These reflections are important in preparing for our own work making sound for other media.

You are also changing as a sound-maker, how and why will you change over this semester?

part 2

The second part of this session covers an exploration of the terminology used in film-sound analysis and explores ways we might apply these terms when talking about the work of others.

What words and descriptions can we invent to help us better understand and relate to media experiences?

How might these reflections, revelations, abstractions and inventions be used to make us better at our own craft?

At week 3’s session we will be discussing ways of shifting from film sound analysis towards scores that might make new sonic forms and experiences. However, we’ll also be listening to and looking at your response to the this task:

Choose one of the following fixed media items and make it sound. The sound duration need be no longer than 15 seconds.
